Mid-19th century: Two Englishmen, Richard Burton, a renowned ethnologist and adventurer, and officer John Speke, have an ambitious goal: to find the legendary source of the Nile. However, a first expedition to East Africa ends fatally for part of their team. Driven by the desire to solve the mystery of the source, they set out on a second expedition, during which both are initially taken prisoner before only one of them is able to continue on to reach the destination of their journey. This becomes a turning point in their relationship: the friendship that grew out of their shared hardships turns into a bitter rivalry fueled by ambition, jealousy, and intrigue...

MOUNTAINS OF THE MOON follows the true story of Burton and Speke and is considered the magnum opus of New Hollywood co-founder Bob Rafelson (THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE, HEAD): a captivating, opulent adventure epic and an impressive portrait of a fracturing friendship. It's not just the magnificent images of the expeditions, photographed by Oscar winner Roger Deakins, that linger in the memory. The film is based on the novel “Burton and Speke” by William Harrison, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Rafelson.
